I have been collecting comic books since I was seven and Marvel specifically when I was nine. Batman, Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog, and Spider-Man were the big draws for me. The end of an era has come as I am from this day forward, canceling all of my subscriptions, or pulls, from Marvel with DC Comics not far behind.
Marvel and DC, most likely, could not care less about what my humble website thinks, and that is okay. If you are curious about what prompted this decision, the answer is easy. Their conduct has consistently shown that they care little about their fans, consumers, or collectors. Sure, they preach tolerance to pander to social media woke SJWs who do not buy their products while they show intolerance to their customers.
This has been building for a while, especially since the Marvel NOW event which merged the woke Ultimate Universe with Earth-616, the mainstream continuity. I had pulls for their Star Wars, Alien, X-Men, Avengers, as well as Spider-Man. Slowly, they all were canceled with Spidey being the last holdout.
One event became the straw that broke the camel’s back. As Bleeding Fool reports, Marvel Comics decided to call the Christian Messiah a “mutant” whom Christians created a whole religion around and even referred to the Phoenix Force (an alien lifeform) as the Holy Spirit. This is ahead of Easter no less.
The same thing goes for DC Comics. They planned to do a whole series mocking the Second Coming of Christ, an upcoming event many Christians hold sacred. As Bounding Into Comics noted, that series was canceled following an outcry, though the creators are shopping it around.
Mocking Christians is nothing new in pop culture. In fact, Christians have been doing it to each other forever. Go to any mainstream stand-up comedy, TV show, or film, and you will find mockery of Christians and their beliefs. Sometimes it is meant to highlight hypocrisy with entertainment. Sometimes it is a mean-spirited mockery. The latter is true of DC and Marvel. With this in mind, I will not give my cash to it. These companies use to try to reach everyone, with Christian faith to characters like Flash and Daredevil being brought to light. No longer. They only care about pandering to fake fans.
As an aside, I highly doubt they would mock Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, or even atheists the way they do Christians.
I am not calling for anyone to lose their jobs or for the companies to be dissolved. I am simply choosing to take my money elsewhere. With DC Comics, I have commitments to my readers as far as certain titles. In that regard, I will complete the three Batman story arcs (Batman/Catwoman, One Dark Knight, and The Adventures Continue) and that will be it. With Marvel, it is done. A few pre-scheduled reviews will go out, but after that, I will continue to focus on older comics or graphic novels I pick up at used bookstores or in the discount section of my local comic shop.
