‘Suburban Nightmare: Chris Watts’ Documentary Review

Written by Vince Sherry, ‘Suburban Nightmare: Chris Watts‘ is a true crime documentary that was released exclusively on the Tubi streaming service. It was made by FOX Alternative Entertainment and Streetcar Entertainment.

The documentary recounts the story of Chris Watts, the murderer who killed his pregnant wife Shannan Watts and their two daughters. From the beginning, law enforcement was suspicious of Chris because his neighbors made several comments about his odd behavior. It soon turns out that Chris was having an affair with a geologist and needed to get rid of his family so he could “start over” with his mistress. After failing a polygraph, Chris finally cracks, though he blames Shannan for the death of their children. This was turned out to be a lie obviously and he would plead guilty.

This feature focused on the reaction to the community and how law enforcement saw through his numerous lies. The interviews were decent and added some insight into the crime. I was happy to see how they showed Chris as the scumbag he truly is as a lot of commentators want to try to give him sympathy. Nope, he is a disturbed individual and I am glad that it showed how big of a disgusting person he is.

The most disturbing part of the documentary was listening to Chris Watts’ final confession that he gave from prison. Listening to how he killed his wife and children truly revealed how terrible it was for them. It is tough to listen to, but it is important to show the reality that his victims faced. I think this feature truly revealed the crime and brought it out. They did leave out a lot of the personal stories that have been revealed via other documentaries but still had provided all of the necessary information about the crime.
