‘Knuckles’ TV Show Review

Knuckles is a spin-off miniseries created by John Whittington and Toby Ascher. It was created with SEGA Team Sonic and Paramount who immediately streamed all six episodes to their streaming service. It is tied to the Sonic The Hedgehog films directed by Jeff Fowler.

Knuckles (Idris Elba) is having trouble adjusting to life on Earth, even with the encouragement of Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey). When he sees the ghost of his ancestor Pachacamac (Christopher Lloyd), he becomes convinced he must take an apprentice to teach about being a warrior. He chooses Green Hill deputy Wade Whipple (Adam Pally). Wade longs to be a pro bowler after his father Pistol Pete (Cary Elwes) abandoned him. After Knuckles and Wade head to Reno for a bowling tournament, corrupt government agents Mason (Scott Mescudi) and Willoughby (Ellie Taylor) chase after them after making a deal with the evil Buyer (Rory McCann).

If you are looking for a super serious dark analysis of the human condition, pass this one by. However, if your family is looking for a good time loaded with nostalgia, you should add it to your watch list.

Now, the show is not perfect. Episode four is very dull as Knuckles is barely involved and focuses way too much on Wade. It also just sort of ends and does not bring it back to the beginning when it clearly should have. I also thought some of the humor was a bit off at times as you can tell they made it with kids in mind.

That being said, I had a good time. The story is interesting and keeps your attention as you follow Wade and Knuckles on their epic journey. It had a lot of fun moments and wacky violence complete with some pulse-pounding moments and some funny scenes.

I also have to say that Idris Elba does an amazing job as Knuckles. You can definitely tell he is having a good time and wants to give fans a good time. He truly dives into the role and makes it his on the same level as the films. This is not surprising, considering Elba has worked in film and television.

As I stated previously, this television show is a good watch for fans and while imperfect, I think fans of Knuckles The Echidna will enjoy it with their family.
