‘Kaiju No. 8’ Volume 4 Manga Review

Jump Comics presents the fourth volume of Kaiju No. 8 by Naoya Matsumoto. The story follows Kafka, a soldier who defends Japan against kaiju but gets mutated into one himself. It was brought to the United States by Viz Media.

From the GoodReads descriptions,

“The Defense Force’s Tachikawa base is attacked from the sky by a group of monsters, but with the efforts of the members, they begin to repel the remaining beasts. Meanwhile, Hoshina unleashes all his strength and fights back against the giant monster. It seemed like the situation had been resolved, but there was a change in the giant monster…!? And Kafka’s sensing ability also reacted to it. What appeared there…!? The “threat” continues…”

First of all, the artwork is phenomenal. I love how Matsumoto designs the human characters. Everyone has incredibly unique designs and they stand out when it is their moment. Hoshina really got to stand out here and you got to see his sword style. The same is true of the monsters. They are incredible and definitely make you squirm when one comes up on the page.

With the story, it takes it to the next level. With the threat of the monster at hand, Kafka debates whether to reveal his identity at the eighth kaiju. This not only made the action more emotional, but it opened up a new facet of the plot that you did not expect.
