‘The Ancient Magus’ Bride’ Anime Season 2 Part 2 Review

The Ancient Magus’ Bride second season returned for part two to wow fans with its paranormal chills. Based on the dark fantasy manga from Kore Yamazaki, Studio Kafka and director Kazuaki Terasaw also produced these twelve episodes.

The Japanese Sleigh Beggy Chise (Dani Chambers) and her mentor Elias Ainsworth (Brian Mathis) are settling at the academy. As Chise continues to get to know her classmates, strange occurrences continue to haunt her and her classmates including her roommate Lucy (Sarah Roach). Soon, a violent force begins attacking the teachers and students. To make matters worse, her friend Philomela Sargant (Jill Harris) is getting sick even as werewolves hunt around the city.

My issue with this season is that it relies a lot less on the folklore and focuses way too much on the students’ drama. Had it honed in on the terrifying nature of mythology like in the first season, I could have enjoyed it a bit more.

That being said, it still pulled me in. The story of Chise and Elias is what hooks you to it. Chise wants to help, but refuses to risk the lives of others, putting herself as the sacrifice. She is constantly chastised for needlessly risking her life, but it is also why she has such loyal friends. It makes for a dramatic conclusion as secrets are revealed and I hope it gets renewed for a third season.
