Normal World Is Beating Late-Night At Its Own Game

John Oliver. Jimmy Kimmel. Jimmy Fallon. Steven Colbert. Seth Meyer. All late-night hosts are now the frontmen for a once-great American tradition. Unfortunately, neither they nor the networks they yuck it up on are curating that tradition.

Once a source of laughter, the late-night comedy hours are now hosted by a bunch of yes-men who want claps not laughs from their audiences for political commentary instead of jokes. It is a shadow of what late-night used to be with greats like Johnny Carson, Arsenio Hall, Jay Leno, David Letterman, and others.

There seemed to be no end to this lack of comedy, but then a glimmer came from the most unexpected place. Blaze Media released Normal Normal in 2023 hosted by comedian David Landau and actor Garrett Morrison, better known as Quarter Black Garrett.

In the constellation of late-night talk shows, Normal World shines like a spotlight, burning bright. It is not just another show with a monologue and celebrity interviews. It is a vibrant explosion of introspection, humor, and heart, daring to be different and, in doing so, becoming a beacon of what late-night television used to be and could be.

Landau and Garrett have excellent chemistry mocking the news of day, interviewing interesting guests, and performing comedy sketches that are gut-busters. They also bring on some hilarious talent to participate in their performances, keeping it fresh.

Fortunately, Normal World has avoided identity politics or touting the line of the “current thing.” It is about making the audience laugh and side-splitting laughter. The comedic arsenal is vast, from witty monologues skewering pop culture using sketches to satire of political and religious subjects. One of my favorites is one where they lampoon horror author Stephen King.

The show’s performances are more than just funny, they are meticulously crafted parodies of societal norms and social media tropes. They tackle everything from family issues to politics of the day, all with a wink and a healthy dose of absurdity. Unlike the hosts mentioned above, Landau and Garrett cater to no one.

Normal World is a refreshing late-night alternative that is irreverent, clever, and witty, but never caves to political correctness. Late-night hosts better take note, because Landau and Garrett are beating them at their own game.
