‘Blue Clues’ Steve Burns And His Music

If you grew up in the nineties, you knew about Blue Clues. The show followed the doggie Blue and her human pal Steve, played by actor Steve Burns. It aired on Nickelodeon and was a huge success, but in 2002, Steve departed for college or so the audience was told.

His departure set off a flurry of conspiracy theories suggesting criminal acts, car accidents, and addiction. These theories could have their own article, but the truth was not far off and that he had become a rock star. Steve Burns decided to explore his first talent, that being music.

Burns’ musical roots sprouted long before Blue’s Clues. He played in college bands and honed his songwriting skills, even collaborating with the Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd while writing his debut album. This collaboration blossomed into a fruitful partnership shaping Burns’ musical identity.

In 2003, Burns released his first solo album, ‘Songs for Dustmites'” He has said in interviews that he thought Drozd would hate the demos that he sent, but the opposite ended up being true and it would grow into that album. This introspective collection of indie rock tunes explored themes of childhood, adulthood, and the search for meaning. Tracks like “Mighty Little Man” and “Mighty Big World” resonated with fans, showcasing a depth and vulnerability that surprised many. “Mighty Little Man” would become the theme song for the sitcom Young Sheldon.

In 2009, Burns formed the band ‘Steve Burns and the Struggle’ with Drozd and Ryan Smith of the band A Million Billion. Their debut album, ‘Deep Sea Recovery Efforts,’ took a darker, more experimental turn, blending indie rock with elements of electronica and psychedelia. Songs like “A Very Troubled Day” and “A Slightly Bigger Space” challenged listeners’ expectations, proving Burns’ musical ambitions extended far beyond catchy children’s tunes.

In 2017, Burns and Drozd reunited under the moniker STEVENSTEVEN to release ‘Foreverywhere.’ This album marked a return to a more melodic and introspective sound, with songs like “The Future” and “Interstate 40” grappling with themes of time, memory, and the fragility of life.

While Burns’ music hasn’t achieved the same mainstream recognition as “Blue’s Clues,” it’s garnered critical acclaim and a devoted following. His willingness to experiment and explore personal themes has resonated with fans who grew up with him, offering a glimpse into the complex and multifaceted artist beneath the blue shirt and green sneakers.

Steve Burns’ musical career may be unexpected, but it’s a testament to his artistic depth and creative spirit. He’s traded catchy sing-alongs for introspective ballads, proving that there’s more to him than just a handy dandy notebook. So next time you hear the familiar “Blue’s Clues” theme song, remember that the man behind it is also a talented musician with a story worth listening to, one song at a time.
