‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ Season 2 “Shibuya Incident” Anime Arc Review

Jujutsu Kaisen continues its second season with a sequel arc titled “The Shibuya Incident” from MAPPA. It is directed by Shōta Goshozono and based on the dark urban fantasy manga by Gege Akutami.

Suguru Geto (Lex Lang) leads an army of Cursed Spirits and followers into an assault on Shibuya, creating a barrier to keep regular humans from escaping or entering. Satoru Gojo (Kaiji Tang) enters but is trapped in a pocket dimension. As such, the Jujutsu sorcerers led by Kento Nanami (David Vincent) assemble. Yuji Itadori (Adam McArthur), Megumi Fushiguro (Robbie Daymond), Nobara Kugisaki (Anne Yatco), Toge Inumaki (Xander Mobus), and others join in the fight. Still, when the powerful Ryomen Sukuna (Ray Chase) is unleashed… things get complicated and deadly.

Wow. This arc ramps up the intensity, violence, despair, and sheer terror, not slowing down to give you a break. Let me just say, it was awesome. Yuji’s story takes a break and while he certainly has his moments, it instead focuses on several other heroes and villains as they fight to set Shibuya free of the Cursed Spirits. It was intense and I loved every minute of it. It was nonstop action, but you were immersed. Without giving spoilers, let me say it had some tragedy so brace yourself.

J-Pop band King Gnu’s song “Specialz” is the theme song and it was perfectly selected. The song matches what is happening in the arc perfectly and the animation done with it was spot on.

MAPPA has been accused of abusing their animators with low pay, tight deadlines, and impossible expectations that caused a drop of quality in the animation. You could definitely tell at times that they rushed through the product, but considering what they are going through, I do not blame them. Kudos to the animators for staying strong, and holding out, and I hope the public pressure will get them better working conditions.

With this in mind, I was hooked on this season and with Toho joining for season three, I think we will be in for a treat.
