‘Sly’ Documentary Review

Sly is a documentary directed by Thom Zimny and explores the life and cinematic career of actor Sylvester Stallone. It was streamed on Netflix.

Sylvester Stallone discusses his troubled childhood growing up with a tough dad with his brother Frank. After watching On The Waterfront, he gets inspired to become an actor. After appearing in a few plays, he is unsatisfied with his roles, but he soon climbs the ladder, releasing Rocky, which sends him on a career path he did not expect.

Okay, why was Quentin Tarantino in this? Look, I know Hollywood has been trying to redeem him due to his poor association with Harvey Weinstein, but seriously, he added nothing to this documentary, especially knowing Stallone REFUSED to work with Tarantino. Why not free up his time with someone who was a frequent collaborator with Sly?

Aside from that, this was a very eye-opening documentary. I am so glad that they let Stallone tell his own story. A lot of these documentaries let a bunch of useless “experts” blab on and on, but Stallone gets to tell his story. It was interesting hearing his backstory, how he came to write Rocky, and his career highs and lows. It focuses on his two most iconic roles Rocky and Rambo and how those films impacted him personally.

If you are curious about how Stallone’s life unfolded, definitely check this documentary out. While I do wish they had honed more onto a few of his other iconic roles, it does a good job of showing us who he is and how he went from Hell’s Kitchen to Hollywood.
