‘The Great Cleric’ Anime Season 1 Review

The Great Cleric is a slice-of-life comedy isekai anime based on the light novel series by Broccoli Lion. The television show is directed by Masato Tamagawa and co-produced by the Japanese animation studios Yokohama Animation Laboratory and Cloud Hearts. The first season consists of twelve episodes.

A young Japanese office worker is walking home celebrating a big sale when he is shot by a mugger. As he passes, he prays and suddenly opens his eyes. The young man finds himself in a world of magic. Taking the name Luciel (Justin Briner), he is informed by a Valkyrie Knight Captain Lumina (Julie Cleburn) that he is a healer and must train at the Healers Guild. Upon arriving, he finds that healers are mistrusted, so he decides to join the Adventurers Guild where he is trained and given a mysterious drink known as Substance X. As he trains, he gets stronger in healing magic while his fighting skill remains at Level 1, but his activities soon earn the attention of the corrupt leaders of the Healers Guild.

Usually in isekai, the main character becomes overpowered either by finding a special item or by the process of entering another world increasing their power. Luciel’s power is actually gained through training, field duty, and sometimes buffed by magical items. This was a nice change of pace for these types of anime and made you root for him as he goes on his journey.

I also appreciated how Luciel remembers his past life. Normally, isekai protagonists just go along to get along. Luciel is traumatized by how he passed away and in tough situations, he hopes he does not die in that manner again. This added an extra edge to the show.

Having read the first few volumes of the manga, I applaud the animator’s ability to transfer from paper to the screen. The character designs right down to expressions worked perfectly and it genuinely felt like the manga was coming to life.

This was a fun anime that had the perfect blend of action, comedy, and even romance to keep me entertained as I watched Luciel go on his quest to become a great cleric.
