Jonathan Young brings us an animated music video for his original song “Starship Velociraptor.” It is never a bad idea to mix anime and space. It is featured on the album of the same name.
Young describes this song as a “love letter to 90s retro anime.” This is a spot-on description in every way, shape, and form. Using his signature style, Young describes going on an adventure on a starship with a hyperdrive along with a group of eccentric friends. The way he arranges the music, performs the instruments, and sings is done in the finest way possible. It blends techno and rock in an excellent way. It all comes together in a cool way. If you, like me, are a fan of that era of anime features, you will not be disappointed.
I also want to praise the music video as well. Volt Animation does a good job with making it match the music, but also capturing the aesthetics of various genres of anime. There is a lot of cyberpunk mixed in with high science fiction as well as isekai references. While most of it involves space travel, the video hits on so many other trends and tropes that it all comes together. I especially enjoyed the character illustrations, they seem like they fit perfectly with the song.
