Solo Leveling is a South Korean urban fantasy light novel series that originated as a webcomic known as a manwha. It is written by Chugong and illustrated by Dubu (Redice Studio). It was licensed in North America by Yen Press.
When Jinwoo awakens after completing the mysterious “double prison,” he realizes that while his rank as a lower-level hunter has not upgraded, his abilities certainly have. He seems to have been given a “system” that acts like a video game skill tree and he begins exploring these new abilities. When he gets recruited by a C-Rank team to explore a new prison, he must use his new powers or all hope is lost.
I would like to praise the artwork for this story arc. It is fantastic and I liked seeing how it illustrated the characters, the background, and the action sequences. The scene where Jinwoo enters a prison to fight a boss for a “daily quest” is probably the best I have seen.
I love the setting of the series where supernatural dungeons appear in our modern world and hunters have to fight the “boss” to close them. I am curious to see how Jinwoo’s story arc continues to develop and bring it to fruition. He is an interesting character who became a hunter because he did not know what else to do. Now he finds himself being one of the stronger hunters, though others can’t see, and he is forced to make life-and-death decisions when he was usually just a background player in the hunter ranks. I think this will be a good series and I look forward to the anime adaptation.
