‘MH370: The Plane That Disappeared’ Docuseries Review

MH370: The Plane That Disappeared is a three-part documentary series directed by Louise Malkinson. Produced by Raw TV and Netflix, it recounts the story of 2014 disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

On 8 March 2014, Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 vanished without a trace. All 239 passengers, including the crew, simply disappeared with no warning. Families of the victims rush to Malaysia to demand answers, but after days, weeks, months, and years of searching, only a few scraps from the plane have been found. This has led to numerous conspiracy theories over what happened to the plane and all on board.

I remember when this incident occurred. I do not think I have been more afraid to board a plan and that fear stuck with me, especially seeing the families mourn for their lost loved ones. It was something that we cannot know at the moment, even as scraps are found.

The documentary does a good job of telling the story, interviewing experts, and Malaysian Airlines staff who were there at the time. They present a good time frame and parse through anything unusual that may have happened pre-flight.

It also did a good job of interviewing the victims’ loved ones and get their take on the whole thing. They were at the forefront and it was heart-wrenching hearing their stories again.

Where it starts to go off the rails is when the theories start flying. Was it pilot error? Was it the pilot’s intention to down the plane? Did it get shoot down? Did some of the cargo erupt into flames? It goes off in fifty different directions.

That being said, it did a good job of showing how obsessed the press became with solving this mystery. They took advantage of these deaths for their ratings and it was blatantly obvious. Especially that guy who started a blog. He was pushing all sorts of conspiracy theories not based in evidence or reality. Clearly, he cared about the media appearances, nothing more.

With all of this in mind, it is still enthralling that such a mystery, with all of our technology of today, cannot figure out what happened to this plane. Hopefully the black box will be found and we can figure what was the actually cause of this airline mystery.
