My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 8 continues the series by writer Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrator Betten Court. Based on the superhero series MHA from Kohei Horikoshia, the manga is published by Shonen Jump and released in the USA by Viz Media.
All-Might arrives to save the day, rescuing Captain Celebrity, The Crawler, and Pop Step from a collapsing building while Knuckleduster tries to target the villain. Afterward, the pro-hero Eraserhead encounters the Crawler after the lad saves a kitten and the two have a conversation about what it means to be a hero.
I was glad to see Knuckleduster return to find the bad guys in this one. His presence was missed while the Crawler and Pop Step were working with Captain Celebrity. This was a bit short-lived. The manga then diverts into some back flashes with Eraserhead, Midnight, Present Mic, and their friend Oboro’s days of training. While I like the character, I do wish the focus had stayed on the main protagonists.
Do not get me wrong, it is not that the writing was bad. The story is still impressive, but a lot of this was covered in the main My Hero Academia anime and was not necessary for this spin-off. That being said, I did like seeing a pro-hero who was based on a certain pop star. With the Crawler finally getting to meet All-Might, I am excited to see how this will impact him as a hero going forward.
