The Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck and Hollywood Vampires co-founder Johnny Depp released their cooperative album ‘18.’ While most of the songs are covers, Depp released two originals which include the tribute “This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr.”
Hedy Lamarr (November 9, 1914 – January 19, 2000) was a Hollywood star who appeared in many highly acclaimed films. She would also create the technology we use now for our Bluetooth technology. The song is dedicated to her and it rings like a tribute.
Johnny Depp does most of the singing and he does a good job. He makes it melancholic, speaking about the highs and lows of being someone like Hedy Lamarr. It was charming and it rings true with the message.
Some have said that some of the lyrics are Depp discussing his recent trial. Perhaps, but I think it is more about paying tribute to someone with whom he feels a kindred spirit. He and Beck deliver on every level.
I would be remiss if I did not mention how the mainstream critics are “review bombing” this album. While I have no doubt some of the songs were chosen based on Depp’s recent legal troubles, there is no need to attack him through his music. It is silly, pathetic, and unnecessary, but hey, we are talking about the mainstream media.

Jeff Beck described the album on his social media, “Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp’s highly anticipated musical collaboration, 18, is available today! For the 13-track collection, the legendary guitarist and Hollywood Vampires co-founder record a range of covers that touch on Motown, The Beach Boys, John Lennon, The Velvet Underground, Killing Joke, and more, along with two Depp original compositions.”
