‘Sins of the Father: The Green River Killer‘ is a documentary that covers the horrific crimes of serial killer Gary Ridgway who is thought to kill close to four dozen women. The documentary was made by Streetcar Entertainment and Fox Alternative with Victoria Duley working as the director. The film had its release on the Tubi streaming service.
Gary Ridgway terrorized the community around Kent, Washington as well as the Greater Seattle area and parts of northern California. While there is no agreed-upon final number of victims, it is said that he killed at least forty women over a span of 20 years before his arrest in November 2001. During his arrest, he claims he killed over seventy women. The police would get close at times, but he always seemed to be one step ahead before his downfall.
I was relieved to finally have a documentary that brings us a narrator. Voice actor Chopper Bernet did a good job of keeping you from getting lost in this horrifying tale of murder. He would bring us the facts, keep the timeline in order, and I appreciated how he would bring it together.
Using archival footage that has interviews with Ridgway, his son, ex-wife, friends, and neighbors, we get insight into how he fooled people for over two decades. He could be charming, but sometimes, the mask would slip and rage would come out.
They also have several criminologists, reporters, and true crime podcast hosts who bring some insights into the case. While everyone had an interesting point-of-view, I especially liked Stephanie Harlowe, co-host of Crime Weekly. She was sharp and highlighted some important facts about the case.
This documentary definitely had some new information that I did not know from other features that have told the story of the Green River Killer. It is expansive and they covered a lot of ground. It did feel a bit lower budget, but since it is a true crime story, it did not get in the way of the production. I found it engaging and educational if you are looking for how to find a killer.
