‘The Silent Sea’ TV Show Review

The Silent Sea‘ is a 2021 South Korean science fiction thriller series written by Park Eun-kyo and directed by Choi Hang-yong, who based it on a short film he directed titled “Sea Of Tranquility.” It was made by Artist Company and executive produced by Jung Woo-sung. It was released in North America through Netflix.

Sometime in the future, the Earth is slowly turning into a global desert. The South Korean government decides to send a team to their moon base, which was said to find “lunar water” but a radiation leak wiped out the staff. They send Captain Han Yoon-jae (Gong Yoo), medical professional Dr. Hong Ga-young (Kim Sun-young), engineer Lt. Ryu Tae-seok (Lee Joon), and astrobiologist Dr. Song Ji-an (Bae Doona), whose sister died in the original mission. After their spacecraft crashes on the surface of the moon, they enter the base only to find the station staff not dead from radiation but drowning. As they try to solve the mystery, they also learn that a strange entity is on the ship that may solve the mystery.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show. Episode six was a little show and the special effects on the entity were a little outdated, other than that, it was top-notch.

The pacing, the story, and the acting were superb. I really enjoyed the adventure as we watch the rescue crew try to solve the mystery of the station. The stakes in the plot go from the survival of humanity to the survival of the crew. I found myself enthralled as the tension builds from the episode.

It was interesting to see how the protagonists had their personal stories intertwined with the stakes of the story. The Captain and Song have such high stakes, wanting to not just save the world, but are after redemption in some way. This is one of the best sci-fi thrillers I have seen in a while not to mention one of the most original shows I have seen in some time.
