The Rising of the Shield Hero is a series of sci-fi fantasy light novels by Japanese author Aneko Yusagi. The story follows the adventures of Naofumi Iwatani a Japanese student who gets pulled into a fantasy world, gets framed for a crime he did not commit, and is now a pariah in this new world. His only hope is to defeat the “waves” with the other heroes, who he does not particularly like.
During the event known as the third wave, Naofumi and his party, the demi-human Raphtalia, and bird-like morphing monster Filo encounter Glass. She easily takes out the Spear, Sword, and Arrow heroes, but is impressed with the Shield Hero. When the wave ends, Naofumi decides to upgrade, knowing he will encounter Glass again. However, he meets Melromarc Kingdom Princess Melty but is forced to go on the run when he is framed for kidnapping her when he was protecting her from being killed. The four allies have to dodge traps, attacks, and Melty’s older sister Myne, who wants the throne.
Glass is a truly terrifying opponent. She openly mocks the Cardinal Heroes, including Naofumi, though she is more appreciative of his abilities. I liked her personification and her strength.
As for the second part of the story, involving Melty and Naofumi going on the run, you wonder why he is such a target. I do like how his powers are evolving and now he focused on fighting the power of the “Rage Shield” which seeks to overwhelm him with anger. It is a good story and I love the imagination behind it. The story progresses well and I am enjoying it.
