‘The Orbital Children‘ is a six-part anime made by the Japanese animation studio Production +h and Netflix, which streamed the sci-fi series to North America. The show was written and directed by Mitsuo Iso with music by Rei Ishizuka.

Touya Sagami (Griffin Burns) and his friend Konoha Nanase (Cassandra Lee Morris) live on an orbital space station in the year 2045. They are survivors of an incident where a rogue AI named Lunatic Seven destroyed a lunar colony. He lives there with his uncle the mayor (Ray Chase), operator Isako Darmstadt Nobeyama (Julie Nathanson), and medic Nasa Houston (Abby Trott). Tourists from Earth arrive to visit including streamer Mina Misasa (Tara Sands), boy genius Hiroshi Tanegashima (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and UN2 white hat hacker Taiyo Tsukuba (Adam McArthur). At first Touya and Taiyo clash, but when a comet infected with Lunatic Seven aims to destroy the station and the Earth, they must put aside their differences to save the station and the world.

The show is well-written and crafted with excellence. You can tell that Netflix just distributed it because it is an actual anime instead of a radnom animation that they slapped on the title. I also liked the fact that they kept it tight, only six episodes to explain the plot. Now, the lore did get a bit dense at times, but it was not enough where you got lost.

The characters were very interesting. At first Touya does kind of annoy you, but as you learn more about him, you connect with him and his tragic past.

The high point was the animation. From space to character to designs to backgrounds, it was done very well. They did a good job with making you feel everything from the lack of gravity to the inside of “the net” look very sleek and awesome. It was definitely a cool anime that I enjoyed a great deal.
