‘Worst Roommate Ever’ TV Documentary Review

Blumhouse partners with Netflix for ‘Worst Roommate Ever,’ a true crime documentary directed by Domini Hofmann that presents four stories of people taking in unsuspecting roommates who soon become nightmares.

“Call Me Grandma” tells the story of people vanishing from an elderly landlady’s house, but somehow, their checks keep coming in. “Be Careful of the Quiet Ones” is about a man who becomes unhinged when his roommate rejects his advances. “Marathon Man” is about a deadly conman who swindles people out of their money through housing and marathon sponsorship scams. “Roommate Wanted” describes a “serial squatter” who terrorized roommates from New York to Philadelphia over the course of a decade.

While I do feel like the title is a bit insensitive to the victims, I do think that this documentary series explores a crime that often goes under the radar. From scam artists to squatters, these tales will make you think twice about letting someone in your spare room, accepting invites from strange, or booking a place with a person who seems to good to be true.

Each story has interviews with the victims that truly show how terrifying the ordeal was, using some simple animation to show what happened in flashbacks. It tells the stories in way that keeps you hook and as you connect with the victims, you are drawn into what happened. The documentary does a good job of telling their stories and it truly shows that you have to be careful with who you let into your life and your home.
