‘Hilda and the Mountain King’ Review- A Whimsical Kids Adventure

Hilda and the Mountain King‘ is a Netflix animated fantasy kids film directed by Andy Coyle. It is a continuation of the children’s television show ‘Hilda,’ based on a graphic novel series by Luke Pearson.

Hilda (Bella Ramsey) is a little girl who has been turned into a troll outside of her home city of Trolberg. As she avoids the troll that swapped her with her own child, she encounters a giant troll (Dino Kelly) stuck in a cave. He offers to change her back in exchange for helping him escape. Meanwhile, her mother Johanna (Daisy Haggard), best friend Frida (Ameerah Falzon-Ojo), classmate David (Oliver Nelson), elf Alfur Aldric (Rasmus Hardiker), and the changeling Baba (Agnes Peacock) search for her. Meanwhile, the glory-seeking security head Erik Ahlberg (John Hopkins) is planning something big to stop the trolls.

Animation-wise, I really enjoyed it. I liked the style, the character designs, and especially the scenery. It was impressive and unique. The trolls, while simplistic, had impressive illustrations that I thought made them stand out compared to other trolls in fiction.

As for the story, I will admit I was lost for a bit. The movie came up in my recommendations, so I clicked it on it because I liked the fantasy angle. I was unaware of the show so I was initially confused as I had no idea what was going on. However, the movie picked up a bit and helped me learn about them.

With this in mind, I had a good time. The movie is a fun adventure that I think any parent who does not mind a little fantasy magic will enjoy with their kids.

The voice cast was also very impressive. They jump into their roles and everyone does an excellent job. They all had very good chemistry and interacted well with each other.

Bottom line, Hilda and the Mountain King is a fun, whimsical film that I think kids will enjoy and their parents can enjoy with them.
