‘Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers Volume 2’ Light Novel Highlight

‘Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers,’ known as ‘Rokka no Yūsha,‘ in Japan is a fantasy fiction series by Japanese author Ishio Yamagata. They were released as light novels though they would go on to get manga and anime adaptions.

Adlet Mayer, the self-styled ‘world’s strongest man,’ the “Gunpowder Saint” Fremy Speeddraw, “Swamp Saint” Chamo Rosso, “Mountains Saint” Mora Chester, the assassin Hans Humpty, and the bodyguard Goldof Auora are the Braves, warriors sent into the Howling Vinelands to stop the rise of the Evil God and his army of monstrous Fiends. Yet, a seventh appears in the form of the “Spilled Blood” Saint Rolonia, who knows Adlet. There should only be six, but now, there are seven. Choosing to move forward, they encounter a vicious Fiend general, they do not realize he has made a secret deal with one of them, one who has vowed to kill one of the Braves. Can they stop the Seventh before the Fiends get their way?

This volume picks up right where the first one left off and even repeated some of the events at the end to help the reader remember what is going on. I found this very helpful and it did not slow down the story one bit.

I liked the subplot surrounding Mora. While we got an idea of how strong she was in the first book, this one really expanded on her character and showed her vulnerabilities as she desperately searches for the seventh. The author does a good job, however, of keeping her as a suspect. Adlet is the only confirmed member of the group who is not the Seventh and that makes you think the whole time.

Definitely, if you are a fan of fantasy, I suggest you get volume one and this second volume. They had everything you could want as far as world-building, evil creatures, magic, and it is loaded with suspense as the Braves do battle against some powerful foes.

It is a shame that the anime did not get renewed for a second season as this would have made an excellent television show or movie.
