This Halloween, I’ve seen superstition rise on social media as well as in my own personal attitude. I was shopping the other day and refused to walk under a ladder. I’ve been avoiding the number 13. I see all kinds of scary things come my way and I seem to be avoiding going around them.
When I was a kid, I believed in Bigfoot. Now, I do believe there is a possibility that there’s some kind of ape-like creature in the wilderness of North America, but the legends of a hairy Sasquatch with super intelligence wandering around, I no longer believe that is true.
The truth is, there is, if I do not believe in Sasquatch, why should I believe that 13 is evil or that walking under a ladder is real? Perhaps it is the mystery of life. As a man of faith, I sometimes struggle with the difference between belief and superstition. Then I remembered something, fear is not of God. Faith is of God. If I am avoiding numbers and man made objects out of fear, then that is wrong.
Because my God is bigger than ladders, #13, Sasquatch, and all superstition. I choose to have faith that God can conquer my fear because He is not dead, He is alive! Let’s remember that this Halloween.
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7
