Alterna’s ‘The Chair’ Graphic Novel Review

Alterna Comics brings us the horror comic ‘The Chair,’ written and created by Peter Simeti with illustrations by Kevin Christensen. I got a hold of a signed fourth edition released in 2018.

Richard Sullivan is a ten-year death row inmate who has been incarcerated after being accused of killing ten children. He claims innocence to the sadistic guards who regularly torture the prisoners. However, their activities do not compare to the Warden, who wears goggles and chooses a prisoner every night to “have fun” as he plays classical music. When Richard gets chosen, he knows no help is coming and he endures the worst of it. As the torture increases, he remembers his childhood and the abuse that came with it, but things are not as they seem.

I found this story incredibly unsettling. Do not get me wrong, it is well told and drawn to bring out every terrifying moment, but it was downright disturbing in places. You definitely feel the tension of the story and grab onto every horrifying moment. Though Richard claims innocence, the plot does a good job of making you guess throughout his dilemma.

Simeti definitely gave you a comic book to make any horror enthusiast shiver as you navigate one of the worst prisons to ever come out of someone’s imagination. Get ready for the review of the film version.
