Sonic the Hedgehog is returning to television or streaming, at least. SEGA is partnering with WildBrain Studios, Netflix, and Man of Action Entertainment to bring us “Sonic Prime,” a 3D animated series.
“I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid,” said Netflix Director of Original Animation Dominique Bazay said according to Tails Channel. “… and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix — one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.”
“This premium franchise is ideally suited to WildBrain’s capabilities and it’s already inspiring great things from our talented creative teams,” WildBrain President Josh Scherba said. “We’ve witnessed first-hand the enduring popularity of this brand from the strong and steady global demand for our library of legacy Sonic series. We look forward now to bringing fresh and exciting Sonic content to fans both new and old.”
SEGA Chief Brand Officer added, “We’re thrilled to partner with WildBrain, Man of Action Entertainment, and Netflix to speed into this new, animated chapter in the Sonic franchise.”
Disney XD’s Avengers Assemble writer Justin Peniston confirmed on Twitter that he is part of the writing staff.
“Filed under THINGS I CAN FINALLY ANNOUNCE,” he wrote. “Guess what show ya boi has been writing for? (Also, shoot me if I ever again refer to myself as “ya boi.”)”
SEGA will oversee the production of “Sonic Prime” with Man of Action Entertainment handling the directing and WildBrain producing from their studios in Vancouver, British Columbia.
MoA staffer Duncan Rouleau said of the show, “Sonic’s got his whole thing. He’s got an entire SEGA world to explore in the next several years. After having said that, I can’t rule out crossovers. They have a lot of contracts to overcome, it would need the Infinite or Alien X moving things in the background.”
Rouleau said the show will take place in “Sonic Universe” similar to the SEGA games and that it will have a vibe similar to 2010’s Generator Rex animated series and while there are no plans for crossovers with other Man of Action properties, the door is still open.
