Marvel fans hit a dry spell in 2020. The ABC series Agents of SHIELD limped across the finish line and departed harshly from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the Disney Investor’s Day revealed that the dry spell may be over as several television and movie announcements were made to stir up excitement for the MCU.
Most folks know about WandaVision, but now it has been verified it will tie directly into “Doctor Strange: Into The Multiverse Of Madness” which will then tie directly into the third Spider-Man MCU film. These three features will help to bring in the idea of a multiverse which has been hinted at, briefly explored, discussed in Agents of SHIELD, but now maybe more fleshed out. Of course, anything that brings us more Spidey will make me happy.
My favorite announcements were Christian Bale revealed to be the antagonist of “Thor: Love and Thunder” named Gorr the God Butcher. This is a perfect role for him as he has played John Connor in the Terminator franchise and Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy. Also, Jon Watts has been announced to direct a Fantastic 4 film. Considering his work on Spider-Man: Homecoming, this could be the right role for him and bring it to fruition.
New trailers dropped Falcon and Winter Soldier, Loki, and WandaVision which featured new footage for the series previously unseen, according to TooFab. Falcon and Winter Soldier is revealed to be a six-part series.
“Black Panther 2” will continue with Ryan Coogler writing and directing, though Chadwick Boseman will not be recast. The story will focus on other characters such as Shuri.
“I want to acknowledge the devastating loss of a dear friend and a member of our Marvel Studios family. Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and inspirational individual who affected all of our lives both personally and professionally,” Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said. “His portrayal of T’Challa, the Black Panther, is iconic, and transcends any iteration of the character from any other medium in Marvel’s past. It is for that reason that we will not recast the character.”
I am still hesitant about this one. I think Marvel is moving WAY too fast. They should give it time. Let Siri appear with the Avengers and test the waters before committing to this film.
The show Ms. Marvel also got a sizzle reel with star Iman Vellani announced to be in “Captain Marvel 2,” along with Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris, who will play a grown-up Monica Rambeau. Parris will make her debut as Monica in WandaVision. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” was announced with Kang the Conqueror serving as a villain. Perry Mason co-star Tatiana Maslany has been announced as the headliner for the Disney Plus series She-Hulk, which will see Tim Roth return as the Abomination and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. “What if,” an animated series about alternate stories in the MCU, such as Peggy Carter being injected with the super soldier serum that created Captain America.
Other announcements included a “Secret Invasion” series in which Samuel Jackson will play Nick Fury fending off an invasion by Skrulls. “Ironheart,” a show based on the unpopular Marvel Now series about a girl who invents her own suit of armor and is mentored by a holographic Tony Stark. Dominique Thorne will star. Don Cheadle will return as War Machine for “Armor Wars,” a movie about Stark’s technology falling into the wrong hands. Guardians of the Galaxy is getting a “holiday” special and “I Am Groot” shorts.
While I am very excited for some, not excited for many, I think the big question is will Disney drop the woke nonsense that is plaguing their company. Several of these announcements are stuff no one asked for and no one wants, but who knows, Marvel Studios has surprised in the past. Maybe they will do it again. Considering how they handled 2020, it is a roll of the dice.
