Based on the manga light novel Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, A-1 Pictures brings us “Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions.” The English dub was produced by FUNimation Entertainment and Madman Entertainment.
Haruhiro (Ricco Fajardo) wakes up in a strange world filled with goblins, magic, and knights. He is drafted into the “Volunteer Knights” to defend the local kingdom. He joins a team lead by the wizard Manato (Justin Briner). He recruits Haruhiro as a “thief,” shy enchanter Shihoru (Sarah Wiedenheft), meek warrior Moguzo (Jarrod Greene), snobbish magic knight Ranta (Orion Pitts), and woman archer Yume (Jeannie Tirado). The team is doing a good job of defeating low-level goblins, however, when the group bites off more than they can chew, Manato is killed. Haruhiro hesitantly steps in as the leader and recruits Mary (Jad Saxton) as a new wizard, though she has a secret. The group is forced to work as a team, taking on more challenges while trying to find a way to work together.
As far as animation, this anime is incredibly unique. While the characters are drawn in the traditional anime style, the building and background designs are done in a watercolor-style that makes it stand out. The creature designs are good as well. They are nothing spectacular, but they do look pretty cool. Likewise, the actors all do a good job with their parts. No one particularly stands out, but they all do a good job.
For the story, I have not read the light novels so I cannot compare the show to its source material. As for the individual episodes, they are very well-written and the character development is interesting. It is the overarching story of the characters trying to figure out what is going on with their lives and their odd memories of a modern world. The series concludes in a satisfying way but left you wanting more. Since its airing in 2016, there has been no announcement of a second season which is very disappointing.
