Michael Keaton was previously announced to portray an older version of Bruce Wayne in the upcoming DCEU film ‘The Flash,’ which sees Ezra Miller returning as the scarlet speedster and ‘It‘ director Andy Muschietti helming the film. Recently, it was revealed that since the movie is taking cues from the ‘Flashpoint‘ DC Comics event which altered the DC Universe history, Ben Affleck is also returning to reprise his Batfleck role from ‘Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice‘ and ‘Justice League.’
“(Ben Affleck is) a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before,” Muschietti said according to Vanity Fair. “It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”
As a longtime fan of Batman, I am sorely disappointed that Warner Bros. continues to try to pull in the cash by caving to a few angry fans on social media.
I cannot believe, even after the acquisition by AT&T, Warner Bros. and HBO Max are trying to fail up by bringing back Ben Affleck as Batman. No one wanted to see the Dark Knight cry about his mommy with Superman, have mounted machine guns on the Batmobile, allow an alien zombie to attack his city, or endanger innocent civilians as he rampages through Gotham, etc.
I would blame Zack Snyder‘s atrocious directing for Affleck’s poor performance, but it was repeated in Suicide Squad under a different director. Justice League: The SnyderCut will ultimately get HBO Max numerous subs only to see them vanish once people see the terrible film that is going to be thrust upon us.
I was hoping that once Justice League got out of their systems, AT&T would refocus The DC Universe, but they seem to take their cues from toxic fans on social media. We all wanted to see The Snyder Cut, including those of us who think Martha Snyder is a hack, but no one wanted it to go any further than that. The DCEU was a colossal failure that was saved by Wonder Woman, Shazam, and Aquaman, only to be tarnished again by Birds of Prey. At this point, I’m not even sure ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ can save it. Hopefully, I’m wrong, but I doubt it.
The Flash could’ve been the reset button that The Days of Future Past was for the X-Men, only better. Even if Christian Bale gets his cameo or we finally get a good live-action appearance from Kevin Conroy, the DCEU just needs to either go away or they need to put a real filmmaker at the top.
