Comic Book Review- Lonestar: Heart of the Hero

Lonestar: Heart of the Hero is created, written, and drawn by comic book veteran Mark S. Miller, who has worked on Wolverine for Marvel and Arkham Unhinged for DC Comics. Published in 2018 under the banner of Blacklist Comics, Miller ran a highly successful crowdfunding campaign to publish the first volume.

Lonestar is a founding member of the covert superhero team Unknown Soldiers, which includes Hothead, Scout, Killjoy, Brando, and their leader Pastor. As they are sent to battle vampires in their city, Lonestar is falling in love with Angel, a waitress at his favorite restaurant. After one of his colleagues is killed in a battle with a vampire group of “Breeders,” he begins to take stock of his career and life. However, a surviving vampire is planning revenge for the death of his “family.”

Mark S. Miller shows his incredible talent as both an artist and a writer. The way he builds his universe shows how impressive he is as a creator. I think, with this being the first of several works, we will see this universe get better and better. I particularly liked the design of the main hero Lonestar. He also does a good job of framing the dynamic of the team. They come off as incredibly sincere with all of their faults and strengths. I am excited to see where this goes next.
