In conjunction with their PS5 announcement, Sony also premiered the teaser for a brand new spin-off game to go along with the system ‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales,’ which connects to the critically-acclaimed ‘Spider-Man’ from the PS4.
Some conflicting statements from Sony and game creator Insomniac Games caused some confusion. One Sony executive described it as an “expansion” and while Insomniac was calling it its own game. Creative Director for the game Brian Horton wrote on the Playstation blog to clear things up.
“As we continued with the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, we knew that Miles’s origin story as a Spider-Man was something that needed its own game. Miles’s multicultural background reflects a more modern, diverse world and we wanted to give players a new story, with new set-pieces, fresh villains, and unique quests across Marvel’s New York City. This had to be a can’t-miss next adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe,” he wrote. “Let’s set the scene for the game a little more. It’s now wintertime, about a year after the events of the first game. Marvel’s New York is covered in snow, and just before Christmas break, a war between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army has broken out. Miles’s new home in Harlem is at the heart of the battle.”
Horton added that Morales will get a “full story arc” and that it will be an adventure “akin to a game like ‘Uncharted: The Lost Legacy’ in terms of overall scope” taking place a year after the events of the first game.
It will include new features that are based in PS5 that “will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio and the DualSense controller” and “with 4D scans and improved skin” to make the characters seem more realistic.
I think this is going to be an awesome game. From the sound of it, Roxxon and AIM, both hinted at in PS4’s ‘Spider-Man,’ will make an appearance. That could work to introduce them more fully into New York for future installments. Since Harlem will be the primary location, I am curious if we will see Luke Cage show up, which would make for one epic crossover.
Miles was introduced as a playable character in the game and directly connected his origin to Peter Parker, who helps him get a volunteer job after his father is killed by Mr. Negative. He is bitten by a spider that was accidentally smuggled out of an Oscorp lab and given powers which he shows off to Peter Parker at the climax of the game.
