A Nasty Piece Of Work is a Hulu original and part of their “Into The Dark” series, created with Blumhouse. A dark comedy, this entry is directed by Charles Hood and written by Paul Soter.
Ted (Kyle Howard) is frustrated to hear that his boss Steven (Julian Sands) is canceling all Christmas bonuses. He goes to angrily confront the old man, but ends up just wishing him a happy holiday. However, the boss invites him over to his house for a late Christmas party. After picking up his wife Tatum (Angela Sarafyan), arrive at the boss’ elaborate mansion where he sees his co-worker and rival Gavin (Dustin Milligan) and his trophy wife Missy (Natalie Hall). After being introduced to Steven’s bitter wife Kiwi (Molly Hagan), he reveals to his employees that they are actually there because there is a management position is open. One of them will get the promotion if they can convince Steven at the party. However, after Steven and Kiwi stage a fake murder to test how they will react, the party soon becomes a bizarre event that will shake the guests to the core.
I am not a fan of the “horror” twists some films put on Christmas, however, this one had a comedic angle. Soon, I found myself laughing all the way through the movie. It was genuinely funny and, honestly, I could not put my finger on the source, but I realized it was in the satire that the story held about the corporate world.
The workplace is not always a positive environment. As someone who has worked non-profits and for-profits jobs, the satirizing this film does of the awkwardness, intense competition, chaos, the frustration, and the anger is pretty spot on. It is obviously an exaggeration, but it is done in a humorous way that anyone can relate.
With every test Sands’ character gives his subordinates, you can see some sort of connection to an aspect of a business. As someone who has worked for non-profits and for-profits, I could relate to some of the chaos that you see. Each actor played their part very well. Steven is the malevolent boss who enjoys the competition he causes. Ted is the guy who tries to get ahead but grows in anger as his efforts are either ignored or ridiculed. Gavin is the bootlicker who will do whatever it takes to get ahead. Likewise, Tatum as the wise, supportive partner, Missy as the airheaded model, and Kiwi as the bitter, psychotic wife all added to the comedic timing and mayhem.
Now, I will say the ending felt like a quick wrap-up rather than a satisfying conclusion, leaving no questions, but thinking it could have been improved.
Bottom line, A Nasty Piece Of Work is a hilarious horror-comedy that has you both gasping and laughing from beginning to end as you watch the chaos unfold in front of you.
