Based on a 2002 – 2003 DC Comics series written by Jeph Loeb and penciled by Jim Lee, Batman: Hush is the 13th feature in the DC Animated Movie Universe directed by Justin Copeland with a screenplay by Ernie Altbacker.
Bruce Wayne (Jason O’Mara) meets two old friend Selina Kyle (Jennifer Morrison) and Tommy Elliot (Maury Sterling) at a Gotham evening party, but soon gets an alert. Bane (Adam Gifford) is loose in Gotham City. After battling him, Catwoman steals money from Bane and delivers it to Poison Ivy (Peyton List), who is secretly working with the mysterious Hush (Geoffrey Arend). Ivy then takes control of Superman (Jerry O’Connell), but Batman snaps him out of it. He and Catwoman grow closer together, but after nearly killing the Joker (Jason Spisak), who was framed for Elliot’s death, Batman reveals his identity to Catwoman and they grow closer to the point of revealing their identities to each other. Meanwhile, Hush is waiting in the wings to take down the Dark Knight once and for all.
I would like to first praise the voice-acting. Jason O’Mara and Jennifer Morrison had such great chemistry playing the Caped Crusader and his most frequent paramour. The two of them were excellent together and delivered their dialogue with wit, charm, and the type of banter you expect from a vigilante dating a cat thief. I also want to highlight Peyton List, who was an excellent Ivy. She was perfect for the role and deliver her lines with grave. I will admit, I was not a fan of Spisak as The Joker. His role was small, so perhaps he did not have a chance to shine, but I felt like he lacked a charisma that is needed for the Clown Prince of Crime.
As for the story itself, I felt like it was a good adaption. Screenwriters, even for animation, have a tough job when adaption a comic book plot. Change too much and you anger fans, change too little and the film feels to expansive (especially for such a spanning arc like “Hush”). Batman fans, including myself, are extra sensitive after a string of letdowns. In my opinion, Warner Animation did a good job of condensing it, while keeping the best of “Hush” in the film.
I will admit, there was a twist at the end of the movie that I had mixed feelings about. A friend of mine who also saw the film, did not like it. In fact, it was the only thing he did not like. I do not know how I feel about it. Perhaps I will rage about it later, but while I was watching, I thought, “Oh, that’s new.”
Bottom line, while the DCEU failed to establish a unifying franchise, their animation department is taking up the slack. Batman: Hush is an excellent adaption of the popular story-arc and definitely worth picking up.
FAVORITE QUOTE: Hush, Batman, hush.
