No song entry into the country music genre has built a reputation that is as big as John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” It is written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver about the state of West Virginia and was first released as a single by Denver on April 12, 1971, declared a gold album August 18, 1971, and Platinum on April 10, 2017. Now it is covered by the all-vocal country band Home Free, who recently released “Dive Bar Saints.”
Paying tribute to a legendary song is difficult, but the guys at Home Free pull it off with ease. Their vocals pay tribute to Denver’s folksy style of singing. Their performance hits all of the high notes of the song, giving it a modern twang that only Home Free could have put on it. Their music video also pays homage to the lyrics and overall tone of the song.
