Marvel Studios has officially titled the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the ‘Infinity Saga.’ Spanning eleven years and twenty-two movies, this film franchise defied the odds. Naysayers and Hollywood elitists said it would not get this far and yet it did. While some have been good, some have been bad, but others have been truly great. Here is a list of my Marvel Cinematic Universe ‘Infinity Saga’ Films Ranked from bottom to top:
Thor: Dark World– Patty Jenkins was originally slated to direct this Phase 2 film, but backed out. Alan Taylor took it over and brought us a hodge-podge of a film that barely fits, though it does bring us the reality stone.
The Incredible Hulk– While it does have some entertaining Easter eggs, the film has too much going on and ultimately adds very little to the broad franchise. It is the weakest of Phase One.
Captain America: The First Avenger– While director Joe Johnston’s take was well-made, it was clearly a set-up for the next film in the franchise and does very little to stand on its own two legs.
Iron Man 2– It is a good action film, but little else. It does a poor adaption of a comic book storyline and there almost too many villains, creating somewhat of a jam. Though, it did give us Black Widow played by Scarlett Johanson.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2– The movie lacked the gravitas that its predecessor did and gave Star-Lord an origin that was inferior to his comic book one.
Thor– Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston kick into action as Thor and Loki. This explosive movie was also the first to feature Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton, better known as Hawkeye.
Captain Marvel– This movie would have been a bit higher, except for Brie Larson not doing humor while playing Carol Danvers.
Black Panther– Chadwick Boseman plays the African King T’Challa to perfection with Michael B. Jordan portraying rival Killmonger with equal perfection.
Ant-Man and the Wasp– While still humorous, it was not as good as its predecessor, though I did enjoy Evangeline Lily’s portrayal as Wasp.
Iron Man 3– The revelation about the Mandarin is one of the most disappointing moments in this movie. Outside of that, the action is pretty good as is Robert Downey, Jr. continued portrayal of Tony Stark is excellent.
Ant-Man– Edgar Wright wrote and Peyton Reed directed this hilarious take on Ant-Man who is played brilliantly by Paul Rudd.
Avengers: Age of Ultron– The Avengers face off against one of their greatest foes from the comic books, none other than Ultron, played by James Spader. I know my high opinion of this movie is a rarity. I don’t care. It is good. Deal with it.
Spider-Man: Homecoming– Peter Parker is a young hero who is being mentored by Tony Stark. It is a coming-of-age story about Parker stepping fully into the role of Spider-Man.
Thor: Ragnorak– A humorous take on the Prince of Thunder, Mark Ruffalo joins the cast as the Hulk and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, the team square off against Cate Blanchett’s version of Hela.
Doctor Strange– Benedict Cumberbatch enters the MCU as the sorcerer supreme. Of the phase 3 solo films of new characters, his is the best as it explores the mystical side of the franchise.
Captain America: Civil War– For the heroes to rise, they must be broken. When the United Nations force the Sarkovia Accords onto the Avengers, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers find themselves at odds. Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Paul Bettany as the Vision, Emily VanCamp as Agent 13. and so many others make-up the stellar cast.
Guardians of the Galaxy– Chris Pratt leads a stellar cast as Star-Lord, a former pirate turned rogue. It is an integral part of the MCU and fleshes out the Infinity Saga.
Avengers: Infinity War– After ravaging the Nova Corp and the Asgardians, Thanos and his Black Order collect several of the infinity stones and then head to earth. What follows is an epic battle between Thanos, the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Iron Man– In 2008, the MCU soared to life with Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark. It was one of the best films of the decade, second only to The Dark Knight as far as movies go. It introduces Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson.
Avengers: Endgame– In the fallout with their battle with Thanos, the Avengers are taking stock of their lives. That is, until a bold plan from Ant-Man comes up with a bold plan to save the day.
Captain America: Winter Soldier– Chris Evans is finally able to get his own solo movie and play Steve Rogers to the fullest capabilities. It introduces Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier and Anthony Mackie as the Falcon. It shows how SHIELD has become corrupted by Hydra from within, allowing even Samuel Jackson’s version of Nick Fury to be blinded by the corruption.
Marvel’s The Avengers– Joss Whedon had a difficult task. He had to unite five very large names and bring together a story about five heroes who have to say New York from an alien invasion led by Loki. However, there was an idea and he pulled it off with epic fashion. An instant classic was created and a franchise that will forever be sealed in cinema history. Check out the trailer:
