My Hero Academia is a superhero anime based on the manga created by Kōhei Horikoshi for Jump Comics and Viz Media. The Japanese animation studio Bones made the anime and directed by Kenji Nagasaki. The second season has twenty-five episodes.

Izuku Midoriya (Justin Briner) along with his classmates Bakugo (Clifford Chapin), Uraraka (Luci Christian), Iida (J. Michael Tatum), Shoto (David Matranga), Momo (Colleen Clinkenbeard), and others are gearing up for the Sports Festival, a school tournament the nation of Japan watches with awe. Meanwhile, Tenko (Eric Vale) is trying to build the League of Villains. However, the “Hero Killer” Stain (Robert McCollum) is on a rampage, killing and injuring pro heroes. All-Might (Christopher Sabat) and his former mentor Gran Torino (Charles Campbell) debate how to help Midoriya as he unknowingly heads to a collision course with Stain.

This season raises the stakes. While season one relied heavily on action comedy, this one starts to roll it back. It is still there and has many laughs, but it starts to touch on darker territory. We see Shoto’s father, the number two hero Endeavor, voiced brilliantly by Patrick Seitz, is abusive to his youngest son and even drives his mother to be institutionalized. This makes being a hero very personal to Shoto and it is a huge part of his motivations.

Likewise, Stain is not your average villain. He was once a hero, but soon became a villain who killed heroes that he deemed hypocritical. Because of his ramblings, he sort of becomes an icon with some empathizing with him. It also becomes personal as he harms the sibling of one of the students. That gave it an edge and it was cool.

Of course, this season is also important because it introduces my favorite villains, the blood-sucking Togo, voiced by Leah Clark, and the blue flame wielder Dabi, voiced by Jason Liebrecht. They were minor characters here, but it was still cool to see them.

I liked how all of the heroes evolve. It is not just focused on Izuku, but we also see what the other students are up to and watch as the events change them. It was good character progression and a good show to scratch that superhero itch.
