A film based on the popular SEGA video game series Sonic the Hedgehog has been in development since the 90s. The rights were originally held by Sony, but have since transferred to Paramount Pictures, the movie company behind the first Marvel’s The Avengers film.
Now, we get our first look at the upcoming adaption with a new movie poster released exclusively by IGN. Check it out:
Little is know about the film as far as plot, but we do know a few things. The saying goes that it will combine live-action with CGI animation. It will be directed by Jeff Fowler (Where The Wild Things Are) and star Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey (for some reason as villain Dr. Robotnik), and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, a human who helps Sonic.
There a few things that bother me. First of all, the film is rumored to take place in San Francisco. Where will Sonic be able to run and not be able step on human waste? Looking at the post (and I may be judging to harshly), it looks like he has shoe laces. Sonic’s shoes are not suppose to have laces so he does not trip while traveling at the speed of sound. Now, it could be different. A lot of early posters and what not just sort of tease, but it is different in the final product.
That being said, while I’ll miss Jaleel White as Sonic, I think that Schwartz will do a good job. Sonic is that ‘overconfident dude-with-an-attitude’ and if Schwartz’s character in Parks and Recreation is any indication, he is perfect.
So far, there has been a lack of emphasis on any of the secondary characters like Tails and Knuckles. Most of the information has been about new characters like the one played by Marsden. This is a bit troublesome because I don’t care about “new, hip” characters. I like the old ones just fine. Hollywood can’t ever get that message can they?
Also, whoever cast Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik should be fired. While Robotnik is a somewhat goony villain, all interpretations have shown that he is still an evil genius that has put Sonic and his friends in danger multiple times in both video games and media based on the property. Carrey is the least ‘evil genius’ type that you can think of when you think ‘evil genius.’ Seriously? Why would he get that part?
Despite my concerns, I remain cautiously optimistic. I would’ve preferred a Pixar-style film to make this happen, but at least someone is doing it. Most video game adaption films are pretty terrible, but perhaps this one will start a new trend.
