After The Wedding and the Cold Days controversy, I started to doubt Tom King as the principle writer of DC Comics latest Batman series. However, with issue 54, my hope for King has been partially restored.
The story, titled ‘The Better Man,’ shows Dick Grayson returning to Gotham City after Catwoman left Batman at the altar. Grayson tries to cheer Bruce Wayne up. As he helps Batman patrol Gotham, they encounter villains like Crazy Quilt and the Condiment King. As the story unfolds, Dick remembers his early days as Robin, seeing how Bruce Wayne mentored him and how they bonded over something so simple.
This story is what was needed after the slap in the face of ‘The Wedding.’ It is a heartwarming story. You don’t see those very often in Batman tales, but it is a welcome break after the hardship.
I would also like to say Matt Wagner, he did a great job as an artist with this issue 54. He nailed the tone, the vibe, and the story on a very impressive level.
