My friend and fellow author CS Johnson does not just write YA fiction like The Girl of All My Memes. She also writes graphic novels. Didn’t know that about her, did you? The Serpent-Bearer and the Prince of Stars is fantasy story about a warrior named Ophiuchus who carries a terrible burden.
Ophiuchus is a celebrated warrior among those who dwell under the stars, but he has a terrible burden to bear. The Prince of Stars has tasked him with watching over Naga, a serpent who is constantly tempting Ophiuchus to let him go or to ally with him for power. Things come to a head when the warrior is invited to a party in the Prince’s honor. When he arrives, many other party guests discourage him from carrying on in this task and Ophiuchus wonders if he can be freed from this burden.
Per usual, CS Johnson delivers a spot on graphic novel. It relies on increased tension and conspiratorial dialogue to impact the reader. Artist Eko Bambang provides the illustrations for it and he perfectly captures the story with his drawings. It is a moving story about duty and honor. There is not enough written about those topics these days.
