StudioJake 98- Why I Hate Batman: White Knight

‘Batman: White Knight’ by Sean Gordon Murphy is one of the new titles for the DC Comics new Black Label, a mature audiences themed imprint. I break down the issues with this series and how comic book outlets gave it positive reviews despite it being problematic. Warning there are spoilers for the series.

Now, the writer and artist Sean Gordon Murphy is an incredibly talent. One of my favorite graphic novels is Scarecrow Year One which tells the story of Batman and Robin squaring off against Dr. Jonathan Crane. Murphy served as the artist for that particularly excellent piece of comic book literature.

I also want to highlight the premise. ‘Batman: White Knight’ has an interesting premise where Jason Todd was the first Robin. I found out after I recorded that Murphy had confused who was the first Robin, but that’s neither here nor there.

That being said, the story is full of holes and completely takes the trust Batman has with his family and destroys it. Sure, the Dark Knight has ups and downs with his team, but this series makes a laughing stock of those relationships. Also, the way The Joker was able to manipulate everyone from Commissioner Gordon to Nightwing and Batgirl is unbelievable even for a non-canon story.
