Top 10 New Star Trek Directors

Star Trek Beyond was the last full-length feature film in the Star Trek universe. While it got a somewhat lackluster response, personally, I enjoyed it. That aside, there has been some stirrings at Paramount on who will direct the new feature film in this rebooted movie universe.

At first, Paramount had hired Quentin Tarantino to direct it, liking a pitch he had made to the board of directors. Recent accusations of alleged abuse against him have called this in question, they still may go forward with him. In April, it was announced that British director SJ Clarkson would helm another film.

Tarantino would be a horrible director for Star Trek. He is an overrated filmmaker whose claim to fame is violence and gore. So what? Been there, done that. Now, I’m not familiar with Clarkson’s work. If you think she would do good, let me know in the comments below.

My friend, fellow commentator, and frequent StudioJake guest, Rosemary Dewar, shouted out a few of her ideal directors and I want to do the same. In no particular order, here my Top 10 New Star Trek Director:

  • Edgar Wright (Baby Driver)- It would have the right sense of humor, special effects, and character driven stories.
  • Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman)- Now, I don’t want to distract the only good DCEU director, but her creativity would be welcomed by the Trekkers.
  • Ryan Coogler (Black Panther)- After his success in the MCU, I could see him bringing his story-telling abilities to the Star Trek franchise.
  • John McTierman (Die Hard, Predator)- He’s good at creating intimidation villains and building up suspense. He would be a welcomed addition to the franchise.*
  • Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla)- Jumping from one film franchise to the other would be tough, but Edwards could bring a darker story to the franchise.
  • Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Games, I Am Legend)- From directing music videos, to bringing some incredible action films. Why not send him into space?
  • Scott Derrickson (Dr. Strange)- He knows how to use CGI. He has proven that. He could handle the character-driven stories that are often represented in Star Trek movies.
  • Paul McGuigan (Sherlock, Luke Cage)- It’s true he has mainly directed television episodes, but intense, thrillers that would bring an edge to the franchise.
  • Gavin Hood (Ender’s Game), He may led a lackluster X-Men film, but his adaption of the Orson Scott Card space novel is actually decent.
  • Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins)- Yes, I stole this from Rosemary, for good reason.

That is my opinion. What did you think? Let me know in the comments below and tell me who you think would make a good Star Trek director. Check out my post 10 Villains I Want To See In The Final Season Of Gotham. Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more posts like this one.
