Movie Review- Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Tina Fey is a great comedian, writer, producer, and actress. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot gets her out of her usual comfort zone and she shines with directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. It is based on the book The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Kim Barker. It stars Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Christopher Abbott, Alfred Molina, Billy Bob Thornton, Sheila Vand, etc.

The film tells the story of Kim Baker (changed from the book), a low profile journalist turned war correspondent during Operation Enduring Freedom as the Iraq War kicks in.

She befriends BBC correspondent Tanya Vanderpoel and Scottish freelance photographer Iain MacKelpie. She encounters terrorists, war lords, Afghan officials, as she navigates the dangers of being a wartime journalist.

She also befriends many US troops as she tells their stories, even as her new organization looses interest in Afghanistan.

I have not read the book, so I cannot speak to its authenticity or its historical accuracy. I do know the film went through two name changes before its settled title.

I want to praise Tina Fey’s performance. She was extremely talented in the starring role. I cannot think of anyone else who could have performed this role. She was spot on and believable. She definitely deserves an award for it.

At times, the film was a little slow, but it did keep my attention as I watched how media covered the Afghan War as the invasion of Iraq was under way. It is a harrowing look at a media that cares more about ratings than informing the public.

FAVORITE QUOTE: I think I can paraphrase that.

PARENTAL CONCERNS: Strong foul language, war violence, and some sexual content
