Ephesians 2:10 New Living Translation (NLT)
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Some of the facts of this story have been changed to protect the innocent.
I served as a media producer at a church back home in Texas. I directed the cameras, produced the live stream, worked the video presentations, and on the week days I prepared and edited videos and my pastor’s sermon illustrations. It was a pretty good job.
At the same time there was a twelve year old kid, who will remain nameless, who was in the youth group. I knew from chaperoning some of the events. Not well, mind you, but I remember him being extremely shy.
One day I was working and I found his Mom volunteering. We began talking and I asked how her son was doing. I was in for a surprise.
She explained that her son had no friends in the youth group. Because of a disability, he had the reading ability of an eight year old. She had taken him out of public school because even though he was diagnosed, his teachers would call him stupid. So, he had no friends either way. Other kids avoided him and he avoided them.
She and her husband were good parents and were constantly encouraging him, but he thought the only thing he was good at was fishing.
I listened and listened and when she finished telling me about this, I felt Holy Spirit tell me, “Put him on your media team.” Plain as day. I swallowed hard. I told her to send him to my team and I would let him try to his hand a camera operator. I’ve never been hugged so hard in my life. She thanked me and told me she would bring him the next day for training.
He showed up on time and I began training him. He made some beginner’s mistakes at first, but I noticed he had a knack for it. We trained for a couple of weeks and I was trying to figure out how to put him on the schedule.
I invited him to work the camera for a special event and he did a good job. That night, I saw a change in him. He had accomplished something and did it well.
I asked if he thought he was ready for a Sunday. To my surprise, he told me no. He wanted a few more practice services and asked if he could work a few Wednesdays. I was hesitant, but told him if it was okay if the youth pastor was okay with it. I did not want to take him from the youth group and wanted to be respectful.
The next day, the youth pastor comes to my desk and, this is a true story, “Do not put that kid on your team. He is completely useless. He will mess everything up.”
I could not believe what I had just heard. This youth pastor lost all the respect I had for him. I told him that I would still use him and he said, “Fine. That gets him out of my hair.”
I put the kid on camera for two Wednesday and he did a great job. Then he moved to Sundays and he remained on my team until I left that church.
This kid is now a young man. After working cameras, he began to think he was mechanical and started working on cars, motorcycles, and pretty much any kind of vehicle. He stayed home schooled the rest of his life, but his education and skill grew exponentially.
He still operates cameras for the church he is at now. Oh, and he is a freshman in college.
Looking back now, I realize something now. When Holy Spirit told me to put that kid on my media team, I realized that all his life, this kid had been made to feel useless and stupid. No one saw his worth, but God did.
There are times in our lives when we feel worthless, but you know what, God made us to be His masterpieces. When of think of God creating the universe, we think of the largeness of it all, but He took time with us. He wants us to do good works for Jesus Christ our Savior.
If you are reading this and you feel like God cannot use you because your this way or that, remember, He made you in a special way. He took time with you and made you to be a masterpiece.
