I am going to start with the most well known Bible verse in the United States of America.
John 3:16- For God so loved the world that He gave His holy unique Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.
This is a perfect example of grace. What is grace, you ask. Grace is getting something you do not deserve. No, we are not talking about getting something you did not win. We are talking about getting love when all you’ve given is scorn. We are talking about getting forgiveness when you hurt someone harshly. That is grace.
Take a look at the “lost” parables (a story with a spiritual meaning) that Jesus told in the Gospel of Luke chapter 15.
The first one is about a sheep in a herd of one hundred. It wanders away from the other sheep and when the shepherd notices, he risks his life to find it. When he finds it and brings it home, he throws a celebration. The sheep did not deserve to be found, but the shepherd showed grace.
The second one is about a coin. This is not an ordinary coin. In the culture, people gave women coins as wedding presents. It was an embarrassment to lose it. The woman who does tears the house apart until she finds it. When she does, she throws a celebration.
The last one is perhaps the most well known. It is about a son who leaves his family behind. He takes his portion of his father’s estate and takes off. He quickly gambles and drinks his fortune away until a famine comes to the land. He loses everything and gets a job feeding pigs. When he catches himself trying to eat the pig’s swill, he returns home intent on begging for forgiveness. Before he even has a chance to ask for it, his father sees him from afar and runs to greet him. Then, he throws a huge celebration.
Grace is given though it is not deserved. Each and every one of these stories are a picture of God’s grace. You cannot work for it and you cannot earn it, but God gives it freely because He loves us.
