Underdog Directors That Made Incredible Films

When it comes to making films, Hollywood can tend to chew people up and spit them out. While not everyone can be a Clint Eastwood, Francis Ford Coppola, or Christopher Nolan, some directors make a fantastic film that has the critics all in a buzz, but then they seem to fizzle out. Despite their obvious creative talent, Hollywood is just content to give us the same old, same old. Here is a list of Underdog Directors That Made Incredible Films.

Irvin Kershner– When George Lucas was blacklisted in Hollywood (not by Congress, but by his peers), Steven Spielberg was prevented from directing Empire Strikes Back. Kershner stepped up and directed the best film of the Star Wars franchise. After that, Tinseltown lost his number. Except for a few low-budget films, Kershner was never truly allowed to further explore his mark on cinema.

John G. Avildsen– He directed the first Rocky film, The Karate Kid trilogy, and Lean On Me. Despite inspiring other directors, he never could seem to get a proper introduction to Hollywood. He was even fired from directing Saturday Night Fever after a dispute with the producers.

Penny Marshall– Despite making successful films like Big, she has mainly received gigs in television. She continues to work despite the fact that Hollywood has not been calling.

John WayneThe Alamo was a success and despite a prolific film career, he only sat in the director’s chair with Ray Kellogg for The Green Berets. The later was a Vietnam War movie that was very politically incorrect. Wayne was known for his center-right politics, a belief that would earb him ire in the left-wing Hollywood era.

Alejandro Monteverde– Despite his obvious talent in Bella, his latest film Little Boy did not inspire. This caused many to doubt his ability to helm a film. However, he is planning another major project that will hopefully get some backing.
