Movie Review- Thor: The Dark World

1 Thor2

What is now known the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings us Thor The Dark World, a sequel to the first film with Chris Hemsworth.

Thor (Chris Hemworth) is now pitted against the Dark Elf Malekith, who at one time tried to engulf the universe in total darkness. When Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) finds the Aether, a secret weapon that can give the Dark Elves the ability to carry out their plan, Thor takes Jane to Asgard, much to Odin (Anthony Hopkins)’s chagrin. The Dark Elves attack and in the process Thor’s mother Frigga (Rene Russo) is killed. This leads Thor to ally with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to defeat the Dark Elves who soon head to Earth.

The first five minutes are great, then the next fifteen minutes are boring, and while the movie picks up from there, it does not continue with the momentum of the first Thor film.

Hemsworth and Portman have no chemistry in this movie. Again, I feel like Portman or Kat Dennings is misplaced in the film and does not add anything to the plot.

Every time I watch it, I like it less and less. Director Alan Taylor does a great job crafting the tale together, but it still leaves you scratching your head. I was happy to see Malekith was actually, well, Malekith, though less scary than he is in the actual comic books.

While it did not thrill me, it did make me excited for the next Marvel film.
