Based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by author L. Frank Baum, this 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz was recently re-released as a 3-D feature.
Directed by Victor Fleming, this film stars Judy Garland as Dorothy. She’s an orphaned farm girl in Kansas who is living a sad life with her only friend, her dog Toto. After Toto viciously bites their cruel neighbor Mrs. Gulch (Margaret Hamilton), the cruel lady threatens to have the dog euthanized. After she runs away, a violent tornado comes to the farm and Dorothy is swept away.
She looses consciousness and wakes up in the mysterious land of Oz. After her house accidentally kills a wicked witch, she is heralded as a hero and is sent by the Glinda (Billie Burke) the “good witch” of the North on a quest to find The Wizard (Frank Morgan), the only man who can get her home. Along the way, she meets the Tin Man (Jack Haley) who has no heart, the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) who has no brain, and the cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr). With these friends, they follow the Yellow Brick Road, all the while being followed by an evil witch.
When I first saw this film, I was too young to remember it. Seeing it again, it was worth every minute. Before the days of CGI and green screens, there was use of practical effects and the talent of an actor and the perspective of the director is what told the story. It is one classic that brings all of these together into a family friendly movie that is a cultural experience for every American movie goers.
FAVORITE QUOTE: Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.
