Movie Review- Paranoia

01 Paranoia_Poster

Based on the book by Joseph Finder by the same name, Paranoia directed by Robert Luketic (21, The Ugly Truth) and features an all-star cast. However, it lacks the suspense driven corporate espionage theme that makes the book so enjoyable.

Adam Cassidy (Liam Hemsworth) is a low-level developer for Wyatt Mobile, but after a disastrous product presentation, he and his entire team are fired, despite Cassidy having to take care of his ailing cantankerous, yet loving father. He uses a company card to take his team out for drinks, but the next day, he is caught and brought to Nick Wyatt (Gary Oldman) himself. Instead of charging him with credit card fraud, he blackmails Cassidy into working for his former mentor and now rival Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford) to steal Ocurra, a top secret project.

Cassidy arrives and meets Emma Jennings (Amber Heard), director of Marketing for the upcoming Ocurra. They sleep together as Cassidy searches for a way out of the spying when he finds out that Wyatt is more dangerous than he thought, and that Jock Goddard is more devious than he lets on.

If I had not read the book, I would have enjoyed the movie more. In the book Nick Wyatt and Jock Goddard barely knew each other while in the film, the latter mentored the former. It was more about the espionage and the suspense, while the movie became a cliché “haves-and-have nots” story. I missed the twist ending that made the book even more enjoyable while the film’s ending was good, but not as good. I will praise Harrison Ford’s portrayal of Jock Goddard. He nailed the part and was great as the film’s technology mogul.

I would see it again (in a dollar theater) and would probably own it (after it’s in the $5 bin at WalMart).
