Anyone who knows me, knows that I think the Ultimate universe of Marvel Comics is sad, pathetic attempt to modern the stories. However, writer Jason Aaron and artist Ron Garney bring us a rare gem in Ultimate Captain America, a spin-off of The Ulimates.

Captain America helps a group of SHIELD agents infiltrate a North Korean black-site to stop the communist dictatorship from developing a weapon of mass destruction. However, Captain America is stopped by Nuke, a soldier that was suppose to take his place during the Vietnam War, but vanished into the Asian jungle.

Cap sets off after Nuke, but soon finds himself captured by the strange villain. It is revealed that Nuke was suppose to take Steve Rogers place as Captain America, but became disenchanted during the Vietnam War. He tortures Rogers and tries to brainwash him into joining his side.

Jason Aaron crafts an excellent story that brings Captain America to life. It is well-written and one of the very few Ultimate Marvel stories that I think are worthy of the original comic books. Likewise, Ron Garney’s illustrations perfectly compliment the narrative that is created. It links what is good about the United States and shows Steve Rogers at his best.
