In 2000, director Bryan Singer brought to life X-Men, distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is based on the Marvel Comic created by Stan Lee. Excelsior. It has an all-star cast, an epic plot, and the gall to kickstart a movie genre that has changed Hollywood forever.
Mutants have been appearing all over the world. Some, like Magneto (Ian McKellen), want vengeance. Others like Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) want equality. The X-Men work to rescue Logan (Hugh Jackman) and Rogue (Anna Paquin), recruiting them to help stop Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants from using a deadly machine that could wipe out all of New York City.
A little known fact about this movie, Kevin Feige, who is the head of Marvel Studios, actually produced this film before leaving 20th Century Fox.
Continuing, this film chooses to alter the history of the X-Men, making popular characters like Cyclops (James Marsden), Storm (Halle Berry), Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), Mystique (Rebecca Romijn), into the forefront. It is a bold choice and the story is bold. It puts a serious spin on the story, making it driven and interesting.
It is a story about picking sides, even when the right side is the hardest. Singer may have a somewhat disturbing personal life, but there is no question that he is a master storyteller and fantastic director. He brought the X-Men to life in the realest way possible.
