Anime Movie Review- My Neighbor Totoro

My Neighbor Totoro is an anime film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli in 1988. Though Fox did an English dubb in 1994, Walt Disney Pictures released a digitally enhanced adaption in 2006, which is the topic of this review.

Taking place at the tale end of the 1950s in rural Japan, Professor Tatsuo Kusakabe (Tim Daly) and his two daughters, Satsuki (Dakota Fanning) and Mei (Elle Fanning) to be closer to their mother, Yasuko (Lea Salonga), who is recovering from an illness.

The girls soon discover the place they live is filled with magical creatures and both interact with Totoro (Frank Welker), who their father calls the “keeper of the forest.” Though their interactions with Totoro are all whimsical and fun, their mother’s illness appears to resurge, making the girls feel lost in their new home.

Mr. Miyazaki is brilliant storyteller and his talent really shines in this anime film. This movie achieved worldwide fame and has created a cult following that is almost unrivaled and rightfully so. Since its creation, Totoro has become the mascot of Studio Ghibli.

The film is incredibly animated and well-scored with a moving soundtrack that punctuates every scene perfectly.

I loved this film so much and wished I had watched it as child. It would have made a good memory. It is an incredible adventure stories about the whimsy of childhood and learned to live in a new place. It is lovely tale of imagination, magic, and friendship.

FAVORITE QUOTE: Trees and people used to be good friends.

PARENTAL CONCERNS: Mild thematic elements.
